Reverse Osmosis

Reverse osmosis removes many types of large molecules and ions from water by applying pressure to the water when it is on one side of a selective membrane.

The process is similar to other filtration processes, such as nano filtration and ultra filtration. However, there are key differences – the predominant removal mechanism in membrane filtration is straining, or size exclusion, so the process can theoretically achieve over 98% exclusion of particles regardless of operational parameters such as in-fluent pressure and concentration. Reverse osmosis, however involves a diffusive mechanism so that separation efficiency is dependent on solute concentration, pressure and water flux rate.

Reverse osmosis systems range from micro (under sink) systems, domestic and commercial operations through to mobile industrial systems. The major advantage offered by installing reverse osmosis is the creation of a new water source that is the highest quality in terms of purity.
